If you’ve ever watched unscripted TV, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Mike’s work.  His CREDITS span just about every broadcast and cable network.  Here’s his story:

EARLY CAREER IN TV JOURNALISM

My career started in my home state of Michigan as a TV news cameraman and editor before I got a job at my alma mater Michigan State University producing promo videos for their academic departments.

A couple years later, my TV journalism career took me to Los Angeles, where I shot and edited at least a dozen stories per week at NBC 4 LA.   I also did a stint as their helicopter cameraman — I’ve shot more live police chases than I can count!

When working on a large, high budget television series, I am part of a staff of 30-125 people.  Short form digital projects, though, tend to have much smaller crews, if there’s any crew at all.  A lot of times it’s just me.  Fortunately, I’ve picked up so many different skills throughout my career that I’m able to wear all the hats, and take a project from conception, through shooting, all the way through editing and delivery.

Even though I have many years in traditional old school TV production, I really love the new rules for short form video and social media.  So many of the old production rules don’t apply, and that opens up all kinds of creative new possibilities for original and authentic storytelling.  

UNSCRIPTED TV TAKES OFF

When reality/unscripted TV took off, it presented tons of opportunities.  I loved the fast-paced production adrenaline rush, and I got to travel the world.  I’ve worked on every format imaginable, at every budget level, and my work has appeared on every broadcast network and just about every cable network.

My background had been in camerawork, but as I continued in the industry, I added several more skills to my resume – directing, producing, writing, and editing.

WORK PHILOSOPHY

One thing I’ve learned in my long career is that videos may have different formats (feature film, TV series, 60 second Instagram video, etc), but what makes them all effective is when they tell an honest and compelling story.

That’s where I come in.  It’s my job to help you find your story and craft the video, so your story shines through.

Every project is different, of course, but they are all successful because of the common ingredients I always bring:  a strong work ethic, clear communication, and a positive, collaborative attitude with clients, cast and crew.
